vyperlang-vyper-3925-4060
The ABI decoder mishandles malformed or truncated ABI payloads, particularly payloads containing dynamic offsets and nested dynamic arrays. A contract can supply a `Bytes` value to `_abi_decode`, or receive equivalent malformed data from an external call, where an offset points beyond the payload, outside the allocated buffer, or wraps around during offset arithmetic. The decoder may then read unrelated or uninitialized memory, accept data that is too short, or behave differently depending on later writes to adjacent memory. Such behavior can cause decoding results or transaction success to depend on data outside the supplied payload.
This also affects dynamic arrays whose runtime length is zero and deeply nested dynamic-array structures: invalid offsets may be accepted when no recursive element loop runs, while insufficient payloads may be decoded instead of rejected. Malformed external-call return data and out-of-bounds runtime sizes should fail safely rather than producing decoded values or inconsistent reverts.
Valid ABI payloads—including nested arrays, empty dynamic arrays, and values decoded after being copied through memory—must continue to decode correctly and consistently. Payloads that do not contain enough data or whose dynamic references cannot be satisfied within the actual payload must cause the decode or calling operation to revert, without reading beyond the payload or depending on adjacent memory.
